Underwater welding is drawing more and more people to pursue careers in the vast unknown of welding beneath the surface, however, many are unsure of where or how to get started. The American Welding Society or the AWS put together guidelines for those interested in underwater welding, including what skills are needed for a career. (http://www.aws.org/education/plunge.html) According to the AWS, you must be a certified welder/ commercial diver. This means that you must be certified in dry welding as well as commercial diving which requires a physical test that must be passed along with the course. Among other skills needed are underwater cutting (oxyfuel, abrasive water jet, mechanical cutting equipment, etc.) fitting and rigging; inspection and nondestructive testing (visual, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, radiography, eddy current, etc.); drafting and underwater photography (still photo and video). Underwater welding schools teach these skills and whatever else is needed to qualify and succeed in the field of underwater welding. The Association of Commercial Diving Educators posts a list of accredited underwater welding schools and colleges at http://www.diveweb.com/acde/members.html.

At http://www.natpoly.edu, an underwater welding school, they present a 2 term program to graduate into the underwater welding field. These schools, like some others provide equipment for the student, however, some materials are the responsibility of the student. The curriculum required for graduation covers an intro to Commercial Diving, Physical aspects of Diving, Bosun Skills, Commercial Diving Mechanics, Hyperbaric Procedures, Diving Procedures and Equipment, Diving Operations I and II, Topside Welding, Underwater Burning, and Underwater Welding I, II and III. All underwater welding schools must teach information and skills that comply with the AWS D.3-93 specifications. Check for this at the under water welding school you are researching.
